What this is
River & Willow is a collection of field notes on photographing Poland's wetland environments — rivers, bogs, marshes, and the willow-edged floodplains that define so much of the country's lowland character. The emphasis is on practical observation: light conditions, season timing, composition choices, and the physical challenges of working in wet terrain.
The archive draws primarily from areas along the Biebrza and Narew rivers in the Podlaskie region, though notes from the Warta, Bug, and Pilica valleys appear where relevant. Poland's network of river valleys and lowland bogs produces remarkably consistent photographic conditions — flat horizons, reflective water, and an atmosphere that shifts hour by hour.
All written content reflects direct field experience. No affiliate links, no sponsored content, no photography gear recommendations tied to commercial arrangements.
Editorial approach
Notes here are written to be specific rather than general. Rather than broad advice about "shooting in golden hour," the aim is to describe what happens at a particular kind of location under a particular kind of light — and what that means for how you frame, expose, and time a shot.
Where measurements or technical data appear, they come from documented field use rather than manufacturer specifications. Where natural science information appears — plant identification, hydrology, bird behaviour — it is cross-referenced with published sources from Polish scientific institutions, cited in context.
